The work at the Educational Center Ixmukané is based on the idea that access to quality education can pave a way out of poverty for marginalized girls and boys in the Guatemalan highlands. Many youngsters in the outskirts of the rural town Tecpán don't live with their mothers or fathers. Some are orphans. In such cases only the few who get a stipend have the chance to finish their primary school. Others have to work from early age on to survive and to support their younger siblings.
Almost all of the students at the Educational Center Ixmukané are mayan-kakchiquel, just as their teachers. They speak Kakchiquel at home and in their classrooms. The education is bilingual. All subjects are also taught in Spanish. The school foments the cultural self-esteem of Mayan children and focuses especially on equal educational opportunities for indigenous girls.
10% of the revenue will be donated to this Organisation.
